Mitchell Fruit Garden has a rich history rooted in hard work, growth, and a passion for horticulture.
Jeremy and his Dad Peter bought the land in 1976. The early days of the farm focused on planting windbreaks and hedges, and producing a variety of crops, including vegetables like potatoes, leeks, sprouts, and broccoli, along with strawberries.
Challenges
Despite the challenges of producing such a diverse range of crops, Jeremy’s talent for growing soft fruit quickly became evident, and strawberries soon took centre stage as the farm’s primary crop.
Jeremy & Claudia....
As the farm expanded Jeremy and Claudia worked tirelessly on the farm, putting in long hours and employing a team of 18 people to help with harvesting.
Claudia
Many of you will know Claudia from running the shop but that was only part of her role, behind the scenes she was driving force for ensuring all the fruit was packaged and ready for our wholesale customers.
Jeremy
Jeremy, rarely seen, but known as ‘the man on the bike’, who uses his trusted bike to quickly get him around the 20-acre fruit farm. He is the man behind everything that you see, designing the site and is the heart of everything here.
Then in 2022....
In 2022, Claudia retired. Jeremy continues to work part-time alongside Kim, a new collaborator who took on the responsibility of ensuring the future of MFG.
Kim, an award-winning garden designer, shared Jeremy and Claudia’s vision of maintaining the farm’s identity while ensuring its growth.
In 2024, Kim and Jeremy introduced an undercover raspberry crop, marking another significant step in the farm’s evolution.
The Future
Horticultural hub
Kim’s ambition is to establish MFG as a horticultural hub. To achieve this, she created a sub-tropical garden, introduced a sunflower field, a PYO (Pick Your Own) cut flower section, and produces her own garden plants.
As Mitchell Fruit Garden continues to thrive, this journey from humble beginnings continues to a blossom with the expansion of soft fruit crops further solidifying the farm's reputation as a hub for local produce and horticulture excellence.
