Pick Your Own...

Our fruit tunnels offer the perfect environment for growing a variety of fruits and make picking possible—even in the rain!

We use a unique table-top system for strawberry production, where plants are grown in compost-filled bags raised off the ground. This means no bending while picking and a more comfortable experience for everyone.

We also plant different strawberry varieties to extend the harvest season from May through to October.

In 2024, we introduced potted raspberries grown in tunnels, opened them for Pick Your Own (PYO) in 2025.

To care for our crops we use an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) system.

This involves introducing beneficial insects like hoverfly larvae and parasitic wasps, which naturally control pests such as aphids and mites.

Strawberries

Known as a 'superfood' for their nutrient-rich profile and health benefits, strawberries are packed with vitamin C and antioxidants. Studies suggest they improve heart health, reduce inflammation, benefit cognitive function, and may have anticancer effects when eaten as part of a healthy diet.

We pick our first fruit on St. George's Day, 23rd April, but the crop is ready for harvest in early May. We grow several varieties to extend our season from May to October.

Our early crop includes Elsanta, followed by Sweet Eve, and in 2025, we started trialling a new variety, Eves Joy.

To ensure a great crop, we replace our plants every two years.

  • Elsanta :  An outstanding flavour with highly aromatic fruit that has a great shelf life.
  • Sweet Eve : An incredibly sweet-tasting fruit, reminiscent of old-fashioned strawberries. The fruits are large and juicy, thriving in UK.
  • Eves Joy : A delicious juicy slightly larger fruit. vibrant appearance and delightfully Sweet

Raspberries

Raspberries offer significant health benefits, being rich in potassium, which supports heart function and helps lower blood pressure. The omega-3 fatty acids present in raspberries can aid in the prevention of stroke and heart disease. Furthermore, raspberries contain considerably less sugar than most other fruits.

We began experimenting with growing raspberries undercover in 2023, learning new techniques that we subsequently implemented in 2024 by planting a tunnel of potted raspberries, which was further expanded in 2025.

Our main crop variety is Cascade Delight, supplemented by two later varieties, Polka and Glen Ample, enabling us to provide fruit from June to October.

  • Glen Ample : A fantastic main season spine-free variety producing great yields of large fleshy firm fruit. An attractive round-conical shape, with an excellent sweet flavour.
  • Cascade Delight : A delightful later season variety with usually larger long conical fruit than our other varieties. A firm fruit with glossy flesh which last well and has an excellent flavour.
  • Polka : An award-winning variety which produces delicious large berries evenly conical in shape. A firm fruit which darkens as it ripens and lasts well.

Gooseberries

Once considered a traditional favourite, this fruit is enjoying a resurgence in popularity – though it still remains a bit of a hidden gem.

These fruits are available from mid-June to mid-July. The earliest harvest tends to be tart, making them suitable for culinary applications such as desserts and preserves. With a slight delay in harvesting, the fruit becomes sweeter, offering an enjoyable raw start from the bush experience.

Gooseberries are highly nutritious, providing numerous health benefits due to their low-calorie content and abundance of vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals.

Currants

Berries are an excellent source of nutrients: vitamin C for immune support, vitamin E as an antioxidant, potassium for fluid balance, and vitamin K for bone health, and the list goes on.

Black currants have been growing in the British countryside since 17th century, but it wasn’t until World War II that they became the loved fruit they are today when Ribena was given to children as a vitamin C supplement.

Eaten raw they have a strong, sweet, tart flavour. They have many culinary uses and make delicious deserts, jams and in savoury dishes.

Rhubarb grown at Mitchell Fruit Garden

Rhubarb

Despite being technically classified as a vegetable, rhubarb is among the first British fruit crops of the year.

Harvesting typically occurs between late April and July. Instead of cutting the stems, they are carefully twisted and pulled from the base to prevent damage to the plant.

Rhubarb is high in vitamin K, which supports bone health, digestion, and heart health. Additionally, it is a good source of fibre and antioxidants.
